Can I read at Full Circle?
Yes! Bring your poem, story, rap, rant, song or spoken-word piece. It must be your own work, under 2 mins long.
How can I sign up to read at this event?
Please sign up at The Citadel from 6pm. Also be sure to RSVP for this event in advance.
What is Full Circle?
A conversation in poetry. Each poet is ‘answering’ the poem that came before with one of their own.
Is this a poetry slam?
No, Full Circle is not a poetry slam. There are no scores, judges or prizes – just us sharing our poetry together.
What kind of poets are you looking for?
Beginners, seasoned poets, and everything in between – all ages, all backgrounds. Poets Out Loud is a safe, inclusive space, where we respect conversation and call people what they ask to be called. The only thing we do not welcome is hate speech and intolerance – there are plenty of spaces for that online.
What will I do onstage?
Give a really quick intro to link your poem to the one we just heard. e.g. ‘That poet described summer at their Grandma’s house and it made me think of my own grandkids visiting… this poem is about becoming a grandparent.’ Then give us the poem.
How do I prepare?
We have 3 recommendations for this event:
- Bring more than 1 piece, so you can choose one that best fits the conversation as it unfolds.
- Rehearse your reading/s multiple times. This will help you feel confident and more present to the other poems.
- Map out about 10 general themes, questions, images, or inspirations for your piece/s. This will help you see how it ‘answers’ another poem in conversation.
How many poems can I read?
One.
When is it my turn?
There is no running order or names drawn out of a hat at Full Circle. The only person who knows it’s your turn, is you. Be present, listen to each poet; if you feel called to respond, claim your turn. When the poet finishes you can put your hand up to take the mic.
What if I miss my turn?
Seize the day, my friend! No one else can do it for you. By the way, the bar is open. 🙂
