Massive success for Youth Slam poets

More than 200 people showed up to witness the power of young voices at Poets Out Loud Youth Slam 2022, held on August 26 for Byron Writers Festival.

Such was the power and conviction of the performers that both judges and the audience were moved to tears. Themes ranged from societal issues such as anxiety and homophobia through to the impacts of the recent floods.

It was an evening which first time youth poetry small performer Boaz Blennerhassett won’t forget after being judged the winner, taking home a $400 prize.

“To be honest I only entered for the free pizza,” Boaz said. “But now I see that performing poetry is something I can do”.

Nine young poets were selected to perform at Poets Out Loud Youth Slam, the culmination of workshops and mentoring held throughout the year.

Hosted by Poets Out Loud director Sarah Temporal, the evening also featured a performance by slam poetry champion of Australia, Huda Fadlelmawla.
