In this course, you are invited to uncover your authentic voice through poetic practice. Join prize-winning poet Sarah Temporal to explore, reveal and challenge the stories that bind us. Create your own poems in a variety of contemporary styles including confessional, collage, retellings, lists, and spoken-word.  Through a series of creative exercises as well as discussion of selected examples, we will examine what gives poetry its particular power to reveal our hidden selves.

Suitable for beginner to intermediate writers. Ages 16+.

Outcomes:

  • Weekly writing prompts to create your own poems
  • Explore a variety of contemporary poets and styles
  • Expert feedback on drafts in development
  • Strategies for creative process and editing
  • (Optional) live reading to show your work on completion of the course

Requirements:

BYO writing notebook or device. Weekly email access to send/receive drafts, or other arrangements made. No prior experience necessary.

About the facilitator

Sarah Temporal lives and works on Bundjalung lands: a poet, educator, and producer. She explores embodiment and stories that bind us in her debut collection ‘Tight Bindings’, forthcoming from Puncher and Wattmann. Sarah is a three-times finalist of the XYZ Prize for Excellence in Spoken-Word and a winner of multiple poetry slams, with works published in Best of Australian Poems, Cordite, Australian Poetry Anthology and more. Sarah is the director of Poets Out Loud, working to empower voices of all ages through writing and spoken-word.
